Jun 27th
Arianna appeared as a guest on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” on Sunday, along with Eliot Spitzer, Ross Douthat And Katrina Vanden Heuval. In the second part of the roundtable, the group discussed Sarah Palin and what the Tea Party movement represents. “Is the right’s answer to Obama going to be, you know, what traditionally happens with parties in opposition — they go to their base, and they find somebody who’s true to the base, but probably can’t win the general election?” Zakaria asked.

Cross-posted at my home blog, OpenLeft.com , where you can read all of my writing on financial reform and other issues. I’m going to let economists and policy people better qualified than I go through the details of the financial reform deal that came out of conference committee in the 5 AM hour last night. In terms of where it is on a scale of -10 to +10, that all depends on whether you are an optimist or not.
Sen. Blanche Lincoln: The Time Is Now

My constituents want Washington to work for us, not the special interests like Wall Street banks. That’s why I stood up for Main Street banks, small businesses and working families in my home state by proposing the toughest reforms for Wall Street of anyone in either party, including the administration.

The dire straits of the middle class of America has made it near impossible for our politicians to keep up the pretense that our current government truly works for the “people.” Between the multiple overt and secretive bailouts , the massive bonuses and the circular use of our tax money to lobby for these continued handouts, you can no longer hide from the evidence. When Senator Durbin said “The banks..

The following is also posted on Johnson’s blog, BaselineScenario.com . “Breaking up big banks would actually increase system risk” is a refrain heard from top administration officials, ever more vocal after they helped kill the Brown-Kaufman amendment (that would have limited the size and leverage of our largest banks) on the floor of the Senate
Sam Bennett: Elaine Marshall wins Democratic Primary Runoff in Spite of the Political Establishment
Jun 23rd
I just received the best news I’ve heard in a while: WCF-Endorsed Candidate Secretary Elaine Marshall has won the Democratic primary runoff for U.S. Senate in North Carolina. WCF is proud to be one of the very first national organizations to stand behind Marshall – a proven leader for women and progressive values in her state.
Tina Dupuy: Exploit This Tragedy
Jun 22nd
Before the tar balls had a chance to touch down on the white sands of the Gulf Coast – the message from the oil-soaked Republican Party was clear: “Don’t exploit the disaster…if you’re a Democrat.” But if you’re a member of the GOP, feel free to exploit this endless spill for political gain.
Pearl Korn: Your Voice And Vote Do Matter
Jun 22nd
Political activism in America has rarely been as widespread and sustained as it is today. Our reality demand it in light of a national unemployment average hovering just under 10% (and north of 10% in many parts of the country), home foreclosures continuing to spiral out of control, a financial system teetering on the brink of collapse, two endless wars draining us of blood and treasure, millions still without health insurance and a surging national debt that distracts from what should be our major focus: creating jobs, jobs and more jobs. Add to this list of nightmares the continuing BP disaster poisoning the Gulf of Mexico (with the Atlantic next), its short- and long-term effects to the physical and financial health of our nation still undefined nor understood.
