Alan Greenspan: Extending Bush Tax Cuts Without Paying For Them Could Be ‘Disastrous’

Earl Ofari Hutchinson: NAACP Still Hasn’t Atoned for Sherrod Blunder
Jul 25th
NAACP president Ben Jealous caught holy hell from black bloggers for his astoundingly embarrassing rush to judgment applauding the curb toss of Shirley Sherrod. Jealous, of course, quickly reversed gear and admitted that he and the organization had been snookered by the rightwing attack hack Andrew Breitbart and Fox News. But that begs the larger question, really two questions

Anyone who works on reforming the criminal justice system can attest to the fact that such efforts often take years of commitment and dedication before bearing fruit. We are currently at just such a moment, as Congress is one final step away from passing major, if less than perfect, reform of one of the most deeply flawed aspects of a broken and dysfunctional criminal justice system – the 100 to 1 sentencing disparity between crack cocaine and powder cocaine.
Lee Stranahan: President Obama Listens to the Right Because He Ignores the Left
Jul 24th
The Shirley Sherrod debacle shows that Barack Obama’s White House pays a great deal of attention to Fox News and the right wing blogosphere. They refer to it as “the atmosphere,” as though the right wing were a force of nature that can only be dealt with by panic and immediate surrender
Rep. Howard L. Berman: Why We Should Care About the Congo
Jul 24th
Deep in the mountains that separate the Democratic Republic of the Congo from Rwanda, largely hidden from public view, a war has been raging for the past 14 years. In this gruesome conflict, rape is frequently the weapon of choice, and a wide array of armed groups with many different patrons fight mercilessly for control of mineral riches.
Nation Losing Patience With Afghanistan A Year Earlier Than Obama Expected
Jul 22nd
WASHINGTON — When President Obama announced a new strategy for Afghanistan in December, he argued that by setting a deadline of next summer to begin drawing down troops he would create a sense of urgency for the Afghan government to take the lead in the fight, while acknowledging the limits of America’s patience with the longest war in its history. But over the past two weeks — on Capitol Hill, in Kabul and even in conversations with foreign leaders — Mr. Obama has been reminded how the goal has become what one senior American military commander called a “double-edged sword,” one that hangs over the White House as surely as it hangs over President Hamid Karzai.
Tom Vander Ark: Is Obama’s EdReform in Trouble?
Jul 22nd
The economy stinks, the job market is weak, most investors are on the sidelines, and state revenues are in the tank. Environmentalists are sprouting up in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. Health care was an unhealthy compromise and financial reform is barely signed and the big banks are rolling in the dough

What We Have Here Is A Failure To Communicate, About Communications
Jul 17th
This is the kind of thing that tends to get me into fights with reporters, but as a general rule, I have little respect for political analysis that boils down the problems of elected officials as “communications problems.” Typically, politicians have struggles because of structural conditions. The prevailing force on the political fortunes of those in power is the massive unemployment crisis. The media has a hard time understanding this crisis because they live in a bubble and do not talk to actual unemployed people.
Tom Tancredo Is Preferred GOP Candidate For Governor In Colorado: Poll
Jul 17th
In the wake of a mounting plagiarism scandal involving Colorado gubernatorial candidate and former congressman Scott McInnis, conservative firebrand Tom Tancredo has become the preferred candidate of Colorado Republicans. That’s according to a SurveyUSA commissioned by the Denver Post earlier this week: Twenty percent of registered Republican voters who supported McInnis prior to this week’s allegations that he plagiarized previously published material said they will now back another candidate. Another 39 percent of those who originally supported McInnis said they will continue to stand behind him.

The Senate passed financial reform legislation that President Barack Obama will sign into law next Wednesday. This legislation will address many of the problems that led to the near total collapse of the American economy. This is the latest in an impressive list of successes by President Obama, which should be winning him praise from Americans and political pundits
Rev. Jesse Jackson: The Rainbow PUSH Coalition Praises the Passing of Dodd-Frank
Jul 16th
The Senate showed strong support for the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act by passing it with a 60-39 vote. It will be sent to the White House where President Obama is expected to sign it into law next week. This historic bill represents a principled effort to bring financial fairness to all Americans and to ensure that lending transactions be both honest and transparent
Tom Vander Ark: Don’t kill the guys that will make the US #1 again

President Obama thinks the US should lead the world in post secondary degree completion by 2020. That will take more than 5 million graduates
HuffPost TV: Roy Sekoff On ‘Joy Behar’: Why Obama Shouldn’t Sweat His Bad Poll Numbers
Jul 14th
HuffPost editor Roy Sekoff taped a segment for “The Joy Behar Show” on CNN Headline News Tuesday addressing President Obama’s sinking approval ratings. That story, Sekoff told Behar, is a function of the other top news of the day: 26 million unemployed or underemployed Americans, a wave of foreclosures, ramping up in Afghanistan and the ongoing BP oil spill aren’t helping, he said. Obama needn’t sweat the short-term polls, however, as long as he gets results, Sekoff said.
