Matthew Anderson: America’s on "Lockdown"

I’ve noticed that people in my city no longer populate the roadways, corridors, highways and passageways as they used to. People are not traveling with the same frequency as before the great “Recession.” People’s purchase patterns differ also. Discount stores are experiencing a heyday, a renaissance, where patrons openly attend these establishments with a greater frequency and a more diminished embarrassment than before
Katie Stoynoff: A Quick Solution to the Health Care Debate
Jun 30th
As some of the deadlines approach for the implementation of the Health Care Reform Bill, many are still up in arms about the government “mandating” them to carry health insurance (a requirement that does not take full effect until 2014). For those that believe this is a violation of the Constitution and an affront to your rights, I have a suggestion. Stop seeking medical treatment.
Dr. Jim Taylor: Can We Find Common Ground?
Jun 30th
All the talk these days in politics is about how polarized America has become. There is certainly plenty of partisanship reverberating through the hallowed halls of Congress, what with the constant threat of filibusters and the passage of the health-care law by “budget reconciliation.” Not a lot of bipartisan pizza parties happening on the Hill, that’s for sure. And the polarization is deafening on the airwaves and in cyberspace

Michael Winship: In Summer’s Heat, Washington Seeks Refuge in the Loophole
Jun 29th
Michael Winship I spent part of last week in Washington, DC, and the heat already was so oppressive I recalled the old story that during the summer the British Foreign Service used to classify the capital as a hardship post, allowing embassy employees to go about their official business clad in pith helmets and shorts. In pre-air conditioning days, the federal government simply shut down so civil servants could escape to some shade and swoon in the sanctuary of a cold drink. But now the bureaucracy grinds on regardless of the temperature, and even as Congress works its way toward summer recess, its members remain active, or at least maintain the appearance of activity, especially with midterm elections just a little more than four months away.
Thurgood Marshall On Trial: Republican Senators Use Elena Kagan’s Supreme Court Hearing To Trash Her Mentor (VIDEO)
Jun 29th
Republican senators sound increasingly unlikely to try and block Elena Kagan’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, owing perhaps in part to public apathy , but in the meantime they’ve focused some of their attention on an even more difficult target: former Justice Thurgood Marshall, a civil rights pioneer, the first African-American to sit on the high court and one of Kagan’s self-avowed heroes, for whom she clerked early in her career. Marshall’s name came up 35 times during the first day of Kagan’s confirmation hearings, compared to 14 mentions of President Obama, by Talking Points Memo’s count
