BEIRUT; Two bomb explosions killed 40 people and wounded 170 in Damascus on Thursday, state media said, incinerating people in their cars and damaging an intelligence complex involved in President Bashar al-Assad’s crackdown on a 14-month-old uprising. The bombings, the deadliest in the Syrian capital since the revolt began, further shredded a ceasefire which was declared by international mediator Kofi Annan on April 12, but which has failed to halt bloodshed pitting Assad’s security forces against peaceful demonstrators and an array of armed insurgents. Opposition leaders said Annan’s peace plan was dead and that the government had systematically sabotaged it.

Several killed in bomb attack in east Nigeria

MAIDUGURI: A bomb blast struck a police commissioner’s convoy in the eastern Nigerian town of Jalingo on Monday, killing seven people and wounding 20, a witness and officials said, a day after two deadly attacks in other parts of the country. No group immediately claimed responsibility but Islamist sect Boko Haram, which wants to carve an Islamic state out of Nigeria, has been blamed for many such previous attacks. Jalingo is the capital of usually peaceful Taraba state, which borders Cameroon and has so far been spared the insurgency plaguing Nigeria’s north.
Lyari death toll rises to 19 as two more killed

Staff Report KARACHI: At least 19 people, including three policemen, were killed and more than 50 wounded as police and frontier Constabulary (FC) forces continued their operation in restive Lyari area for the third consecutive day on Sunday. In retaliation, two suspected gangsters were also killed. According to reports, around 2000 police and FC men are taking part in the operation started on Friday.
