Joseph A. Palermo: Obama’s "Fireside Chat" (FDR or Jimmy Carter?)
Jun 16th
For well over a year now I’ve been wondering why President Barack Obama, (who is a talented communicator and a student of history), failed to recognize Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s example of the necessity of speaking directly to the American people. Tonight, at long last, Obama gave his first “fireside chat.” He should have done so long ago to clarify his efforts to reform the financial sector, as well as to explain his stimulus package and health care initiatives. (A weekly Youtube talk is no substitute for a primetime Oval Office address.) His passivity allowed his political opponents, including well-heeled Wall Street and health insurance interests, to define the narrative on their terms
Obama’s Oil Spill Speech: What Was The Point?
Jun 16th
President Barack Obama took to the Oval Office to address a nation worried to death over the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, a location used so much more often by Saturday Night Live than by actual presidents that my brain actually released a small dollop of dopamine in anticipation of comedic parody.
Obama Oil Spill Speech: Vows To Get Tough On BP, Offers Few Concrete Remedies
Jun 16th
WASHINGTON — Vowing to “make BP pay,” President Barack Obama accused the oil giant of “recklessness” in his first address to the nation from the Oval Office Tuesday night, eight weeks to the day after the catastrophic oil spill began destroying waterways, wildlife and a prized Gulf Coast way of life. “We will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long it takes,” declared Obama, whose own presidency has been stumbling because of the gushing oil
Richard Greener: What Obama Should Have Said: Two Truths And Three Actions

Instead of making another TV “speech” to us, President Obama should have told the American people two simple truths about the debacle in the Gulf followed by the announcement of three Presidential actions.

Alexander Dresner: Executive Compensation: A Critique
Jun 15th
For me, the iconic image of the Great Recession — encompassing the corporate largesse and irresponsibility, as well as the resulting widespread discontent of this period — is one that I’ve conjured up in my head, from news reports, of former Lehman Brothers CEO, Dick Fuld, knocked out cold, laying motionless on the floor of the company gym, the victim of an attack by a disgruntled employee of the failed bank. Fuld had collected more than $500 million in salary, bonuses and stock options during his 14-year tenure as head of Lehman, during which time he’d stewarded the firm and it’s 26,000 employees into a mess so great that the fallout from its collapse teetered between destabilizing and debilitating the American financial system — ultimately falling somewhere in between. So much for performance-based compensation
Gulf Oil Spill: What Obama Is Overlooking
Jun 15th
When it comes to mitigating the effects of the oil spill, President Obama, like his administration’s federal response, has focused on the country’s coastlines. Meanwhile, government agencies have repeatedly underestimated the amount of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. (The newest estimate, released Tuesday afternoon , is 35,000 to 60,000 barrels a day, some seven to 12 times the original estimate, and even so, “the upper number is less certain,” according to Energy Secretary Steven Chu.) The administration only recently — grudgingly — acknowledged that much of the oil continues to lurk under the surface, potentially with catastrophic consequences in the months, years and decades to come
Janet Ritz: Where Is Dick Cheney During the Gulf Oil Spill?
Jun 15th
Former Vice President (and former Halliburton CEO) Dick Cheney, so vocal during the first year of President Obama’s administration in his attempt to scare us to death on national security, has been remarkably silent since the Gulf oil spill began its slow motion march into the nation’s consciousness. There was not a decision on war or energy the current president made that was not questioned, even ridiculed, by the former Bush Administration number one two. However, since the Deepwater Horizon began its slow motion process of turning the Gulf into a dead zone, Mr

Christine Pelosi: BP Disaster: Wake Up America and Smell The Crude Oil
Jun 15th
The BP disaster is a wakeup call to America: it’s time we all woke up and smelled the crude oil. We are, as President Bush said, addicted to oil and we must break that addiction before more lives are lost, ecosystems destroyed, and families devastated

For half a century, United States policy toward Cuba has been aimed at isolating and defeating the regime. That policy has demonstrably failed.
