OSLO: Norwegian police on Saturday described the main suspect in twin bomb and shooting attacks that left at least 91 dead as a Christian fundamentalist. A police official said that information gleaned on the internet suggested the 32-year old ethnic Norwegian was a “Christian fundamentalist.” The United States and European leaders immediately denounced the attacks and vowed solidarity with NATO member Norway — an enthusiastic participant in international military missions that has forces in Afghanistan and is participating in Western air strikes in Libya. Witnesses described scenes of panic and horror after the gunman, who police said was disguised as a police officer but never worked for the police force, opened fire on the youth gathering.

ISLAMABAD: Lt. General Nadeem Ahmed (retd), who is part of the commission probing the US raid on the compound of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in an interview to an Australian radio station, said he did not believe any official from the ISI was sheltering bin Laden. “[When all is] said and done [the] government, army, ISI are not irresponsible people, they would never do such a stupid thing which would show them in such a bad light” he said adding that “irrespective of the USA, I have absolutely not an iota of doubt on this, that no government in Pakistan, no military in Pakistan, no intelligence organisation in Pakistan would do such a stupid thing.” General Ahmed was reluctant to divulge any details of the probe during the interview but did state that the commission had already spoken to air force witnesses and the inquiry would move onto the military, army, ISI, civilians and the US.

NICOSIA: Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou said on Monday he is resigning in the wake of a navy base munitions blast that claimed 13 lives and knocked out the island”s biggest power plant. Kyprianou told reporters after giving evidence to parliament that he will ask President Demetris Christofias to accept his resignation “not because there is a sense of guilt, but for reasons of political sensitivity.” Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou confirmed Kyprianou had discussed his intention to quit with Christofias by telephone. NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in India on Monday in the shadow of triple bomb blasts in Mumbai. Indian concerns over the US troop drawdown in Afghanistan and developing US trade links with Asia”s second-fastest growing economy will also top the agenda when Clinton meets Indian leaders on Tuesday for a “strategic dialogue.” Her arrival followed the blasts in Mumbai last week that killed 19 people and injured more than 130 in the latest reminder of the region”s struggle to crack down on terror attacks. Clinton will have “extensive conversations” on security cooperation in New Delhi, the US official said, and push Washington”s vision for a political and economic solution to the conflict in Afghanistan and “a future in the region that is free of Al-Qaeda.” India is wary of the planned US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, fearing that militants could take advantage of a power vacuum in the war-torn country.
