China says inflation eases slightly in April

BEIJING: China said Friday that inflation slowed in April, easing worries of resurgent prices and giving room to loosen monetary policy to boost slowing growth in the world’s second largest economy. The country’s consumer price index (CPI) rose by 3.4 percent year on year in April compared with 3.6 percent in March, the National Bureau of Statistics said, a slowdown analysts said was driven by moderating food prices. “Inflation is on a downward trend,” Ren Xianfang, an economist at IHS Global Insight in Beijing, told AFP.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan stocks rallied on Wednesday with strong performances in the chemicals and food sectors, and an easing of fears that another showdown between the government and the Supreme Court might be imminent, analysts said. The Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) benchmark 100-share index ended 0.69 percent, or 99.63 points, higher at 14,613.59 points, with a volume of 256.7 million, compared to Tuesday’s close of 14,513.96.

JCP to meet today for appointment of ad-hoc judges

Staff Report ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) is slated to meet today and decide on approving additional and ad-hoc judges for the Supreme Court, reports SAMAA According to article 181 and 182 of the constitution, judges can be elevated to the Supreme Court when required. On May 1 while addressing the Sibi Bar, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry said that an additional and two ad-hoc judges would need to be elevated to hear the appeal of Prime Minister Gilani’s contempt of court case. The commission led by Chief Justice Chaudhry also includes four senior judges of the Supreme Court, former judge Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed, the Law Minister, Attorney General and a representative of the Pakistan Bar Council
US missile strike kills 10 militants in Pakistan

MIRANSHAH: A US missile attack targeting a militant compound killed at least 10 insurgents in a troubled Pakistani tribal district along the Afghan border early Saturday, according to security officials. The Pakistani officials said two missiles hit and destroyed the compound in Shawal area, some 70 kilometres (45 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan. Waziristan is the most notorious militant stronghold in Pakistan’s semi-autonomous northwestern tribal belt
