Amnesty criticizes US for Osama raid, Guantanamo and human rights violation

WASHINGTON: Amnesty International criticized the United States on Wednesday for its use of lethal force, particularly for the “unlawful” killing of Osama bin Laden in a clandestine US commando raid in Pakistan last May. “The US administration made clear that the operation had been conducted under the USA’s theory of a global armed conflict between the USA and Al-Qaeda in which the USA does not recognize the applicability of international human rights law,” it said in its annual report.

A pioneering commercial spaceship closed in on the International Space Station on Wednesday, a key test in a controversial program to reduce the US government s role in human space flight. Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, launched its Dragon cargo capsule into orbit on Tuesday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida for a test run to the $100 billion orbital outpost.

CHICAGO: NATO leaders will endorse plans to hand over combat command in Afghanistan by mid-2013 on Monday and seek practical progress in opening routes to bring an international army of more than 130,000 back home from an unpopular, resource-draining war. The strategy for a gradual exit from Afghanistan is aimed at holding together the multinational force and maintaining security in spite of France’s decision to withdraw its troops earlier than scheduled. At a summit in Chicago, leaders of the 28-nation alliance will endorse plans for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force to hand over command of all combat missions to Afghan forces by the middle of 2013 and for the withdrawal of most of the 130,000 foreign troops by the end of 2014.

Export quotas could be imposed on products including Samsung Electronics’ mobile phones and Hyundai Motor’s vehicles, one of the sources said. The sources, who could not be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue, both have direct knowledge of the matter through dealings with the government bodies responsible for trade with Iran and the possible imposition of the regulations by South Korea.
