Now, the Ministry of Home Affairs has confirmed a terror plot and said that Improvised Explosive Devices have been used in the blasts. The MHA confirmed two people have been killed and 100 injured, while Mumbai Police control room put the toll at four.

The explosions occurred at Zaveri Bazar, Dadar and Opera House between 6:45PM and 7PM.

The second bomb went off in a taxi in Dadar’s Kabutar Khana area. The number of that taxi is MH-43 A 9384. Two people are said to be in the taxi. They have been injured in the blast. Police have also recovered a tiffin box from the area.

The third explosion occurred at the Opera House building next to Pancharatna Diamond Market. The blast took place in the Prasad Chamber of the building.

According to JJ Hospital, 10 people have been brought from the Zaveri Bazar blast site. One of them has been confirmed dead, while nine others are seriously injured.

According to TV reports, eight persons have died in the blasts and 70 have been injured.

Police sources said the nature and intensity of the blasts was not known. The ministry has confirmed it is a terror strike.

The first explosion took place in south Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, near the famous Mumbadevi temple, in which some people were injured, said Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli. The bustling market also has a number of jewellery shops.

The second explosion was reported in a taxi in Dadar area in central Mumbai, he said.

The third blast was reported from south Mumbai‘s Opera House in Charni Road after 7pm.

All three are busy commercial and residential areas, and were bustling with people and traffic during the evening peak hours when the explosions took place.

The communication network has been jammed. People are unable to get through phone lines in the city.

An NIA team has been sent for Mumbai. All states have been put on high alert. A parked car bore the brunt of the blast in Dadar.

Police teams quickly moved into the three places. In New Delhi, the home ministry put the National Security Guard (NSG) on alert.

An unexploded bomb has also reportedly been found in Dadar and a bomb disposal squad is working to defuse it.

Early reports said a police control room had received a call claiming that there were serial blasts in Mumbai.

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team has rushed to Mumbai from Delhi to investigate and collect forensic evidence. The police have appealed for calm.

Upset with the government, Anna Hazare said that he will go on a fast again from August 15.
“It looks like the Centre doesn’t want to bring a strong Lokpal bill. It seems will have to go for a hunger strike again,” said Hazare.
Is the Lokpal dream over?
Meanwhile, it could be the end of the road for the Lokpal Bill as the government and Team Anna have been unable to reach a consensus after seven meetings.
The two sides are not seeing eye to eye on core issues like the inclusion of the prime minister within the ambit of the Lokpal bill. They will meet again on June 20. If a consensus is not reached, two versions of the bill may be sent to the Cabinet for approval.
The government meanwhile has said that its draft will be ready by June 30 and bill will be tabled in Parliament in the monsoon session.
The government hopes to now rope in the Opposition as well so that it doesn’t alone shoulder blame for the breakdown of talks. The Opposition has sought a debate in Parliament on the Lokpal bill.

Breaking News Faridabad: A small chartered plane, carrying seven people, including two pilots onboard crashed into a residential area in Faridabad at the outskirts of the national capital on Wednesday night.
Twelve people — 7 on board and 5 on the ground — are reportedly killed. The number of casualties could rise, reports say.
The PC-12 single-engine turbo-prop aircraft was flying from Patna to Delhi. It was rushing a critically ill patient for medical treatment. The civil chartered plane crashed on the roof of a building in the Parvatiya Colony near the Air Force Station at around 2235 hours, official sources said.
The reason of the crash has not been revealed. Reports, however say the plane could have crashed because of technical reasons.
Fire brigade, police and officials of DGCA have rushed to the spot. The entire area has been cordoned off. Rescue operations were underway and assessment of the damage would be done as well.

Ten persons including all seven onboard a small civil chartered aircraft were killed when the medical ambulance flight to Delhi from Patna crashed into a densely-populated residential area in bad weather near here on Tuesday night.

Faridabad’s SDM Pradeep said three persons on ground were among the dead when the P—12 turboprop aircraft belonging to Delhi-based Air Chartered Services India Private Limited crashed in Jawaharnagar locality near the IAF station at around 1035 p.m. shortly before landing at IGI airport in Delhi.

Two persons were also injured in the crash. The persons who lost their lives on the ground are believed to be residents of the houses hit by the plane.

According to Delhi airport sources, the airplane lost control and nosedived from a height of about 8,000 feet fifteen minutes before landing. There were strong gusty winds due to a dust-storm at the time of the crash.

The plane caught fire as soon as it crashed on two houses sending up plumes of smoke.

The airplane was ferrying a critically ill patient Rahul Raj, a young Patna—based businessman, to be taken to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi for further medical management. Raj, who was in coma, was undergoing treatment in Patna’s Jagdish Memorial hospital. The airplane was arranged by Apollo Hospital.

Besides the two pilots, two doctors and two medical attendants accompanying the patient were on board the ill—fated aircraft. The plane was piloted by Harpreeet with Manjeet Kataria as the co—pilot.

Dr Arshad and Dr Rajesh were the doctors while Ratnesh Kumar and Shiril the medical attendants.

The bodies of all the 10 victims were charred beyond recognition, according to Faridabad Police Commissioner P.K. Agarwal. The plane had taken off at 9.30 PM.

11:10 am: The first concession speech is in.

The Communists have graciously accepted defeat in West Bengal where the Trinamool is on the verge of a crushing win that ends 34 years of Left Front rule.

“It’s a people’s mandate, and we respect the mandate,” Gurudas Dasgupta of the Communist Party of India (CPI) said.

11:02 am: Karunanidhi’s last bow, it most certainly is. The DMK might be in for a rocky future, with his two sons MK Stalin and MK Azhagiri possibly fighting it out to claim his political legacy. Another interesting question – How will this rout affect the cases against Kanimozhi and A Raja?

10:55 am: The fight is getting closer in Puducherry. It is 13-10 (with 25 leads known) in favour of the Congress and allies.

10:45 am: Some big individual results now. In Kerala, UDF’s KM Mani retains Pala and creates history by winning a 12th consecutive term from the same constituency.

No big surprises, but the popular Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan has also joined the rank of the winners, from his constituency of Malampuzha.

10:35 am: Assam it can be said will stay with the Congress. The Congress plus allies are ahead in 56 of the 78 seats. It is a ringing endorsement for the 75-year-old Tarun Gogoi, one of the few surviving Congress satraps.

Assam, Tamil Nadu (ADMK and allies) and West Bengal (TMC and allies) are then decided. Congress is ahead in Kerala. Puducherry too seems set to be retained by the Congress – they are ahead in 13 of the 21 seats for which we have leads.

10:32 am: Interesting Kerala election fact:

The very first election to the Kerala legislative assembly (after the 1956 States reorganisation act was implemented) in 1957 saw the Communist Party of India, led by EMS Nambodiripad, come to power. It was the first democratically elected communist government in the world.

10:30 am: In Kerala, the Congress is ahead. But only just. Their Chief Ministerial candidate Oommen Chandy has won from Puthuppally.

10:20 am: ADMK and allies are headed for a massive landslide in Tamil Nadu. Amma’s supporters are already celebrating in Chennai. Crackers are being burst. ADMK flags are being waved. In fact, it seems like ADMK, by present trends, might even post a bigger win than the Trinamool. Karunanidhi might not be Chief Minister anymore. He will be 92 years old when the next elections come around. Are we in for a long, bitter succession war in DMK? And how might it impact the future of the party? Interesting questions all.

9:50 am: As we await Mamata’s historic win in Bengal, an interesting election tidbit from there:

One of the earliest elections in South Asia brought to power Gopala, a military commander, who was elected the first Buddhist king of Bengal in the eighth century – in 750 AD in Gaur (now in the Malda district in Bengal) to be precise according to a famous Buddhist historian Taranatha (1575-1634).

Gopala was the founder of the famous Pala empire of yore.

9:40 am: For all of you who were missing tables on this page, here goes our first one. In TN, Amma has reasons to cheer, folks, and here is why:

9:30 am: An interesting Tamil Nadu factoid: The first assembly elections involving Tamil Nadu (in the Madras State as it was known then) threw up a hung assembly.

The Congress party, the leading party in the state then, could only win 152 of the 375 seats.

They were forced to turn to that towering figure in Indian politics, C Rajagopalachari (who later refused to stand for a by-election and had to be nominated by the governor).

The wily legend managed to lure back T Prakasam, a key figure, and engineer a series of re-alignments of the various political parties and the independents. When the vote of confidence came, Rajaji won it by 200 votes to 151.

9:23 am: We are not calling Tamil Nadu yet. But ADMK and allies are pulling ahead at the moment, with early leads putting them ahead in 47 out of the 70 seats.

9:20 am: The Bengal elections it is safe to say is in TMC’s bag. Mamata and her allies are ahead in 112 seats, with the Left heading for a rout with just 49 seats against their name.

9:14 am: Assam seems headed the Congress way. Tarun Gogoi looks set to lead his party to a third term in power if early leads are indications. Congress and allies are ahead in 21 out of the 26 seats for which data is in. The Asom Gana Parishad its closest competitor is leading in only three seats.

9:03 am: Early leads seem to suggest that Tamil Nadu is another state where a close fight might be in the offing. ADMK and allies are ahead in six seats and DMK and allies ahead in four.

8:58 am: 20-7 for the TMC now. Let us reiterate that these are only leads. But the trend seems to point to a Left rout in West Bengal and an end to their 34-year-long stint in power.

A brief pen-sketch of Mamata, the Chief Minister to be: The 56-year-old single woman lives with her mother. The Lok Sabha lists her permanent address as 30-B, Harish Chatterjee Street,Kolkata-700 026 West BengalTels. (033) 24753000.

The daughter of a teacher, she holds a MA, BEd and LLB, and also was trained in work education.

She is known for her fiery temper and frugal lifestyle.

A battle-hardened poll veteran, she certainly is. CPM acolytes famously fractured her skull leaving her hospitalised for many months. As she told Jim Yardley of the New York Times, “They have attacked me many times. From my belly to my back to my eyes, I’m covered in these things (scars).’

8:49 am: Early indications are that Kerala is in for a keen fight. It is a dead heat there with both the UDF and the LDF leading in 58 constituencies each. The two biggies CPI (M) and the Congress have fielded 84 and 81 candidates in the fray respectively. Either of the fronts will need a 71-seat tally to gain a clear majority in the 140-seat assembly.

8:43 am: TMC and allies have begun to pull ahead in West Bengal. Mamata’s combine is now ahead in 10 out of the 15 constituencies for which leads are in. Mamata spent Thursday working on her paintings. Preparations for a huge victory celebration were also underway at her residence with loudspeakers and the rest of the paraphernalia already assembled.

8:40 am: The action is hotting up in Kerala. Now it is neck and neck with both the UDF and the LDF leading in 40 constituencies each.

8: 29 am: It is 36-27 in favour of the UDF (the Congress Front) in Kerala now. Left Front are leading in two constituencies in West Bengal. DMK continues to be ahead in the only seat for which leads are available in Tamil Nadu.

8:22 am: More leads from Kerala. The tally is 25 for UDF and 17 for LDF. DMK is leading in the only seat for which data is available at the moment from TN.

8.10 am: First leads pour in from Kerala. Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan leads in Malampuzha for over 1000 votes. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan leading in Thalassery with over 3000 votes. UDF is leading in five seats.

8 am: The six-week wait for who will rule Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Assam and West Bengal ends today. Counting of votes for Assembly elections began at 8 am in 839 halls spread over in the five states involving 43,982 personnel.

Ahead of counting

Record turnout

It has been one of the biggest elections in recent times.

Big because Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the two most important states among the five awaiting the verdicts on Friday, have recorded their highest polling percentages in 60 years.

Big because all analysts are predicting a win (at long last) for Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance, who they say will sweep the ruling Left Front out of power for the first time in 34 years.

And big, well, because when over 215 million people get together to decide their future, you can’t call the event anything but big…

Some interesting facts from the polling data shared by the election commission ahead of the results.

Home is where their heart is

For the first time 4,639 overseas voters, out of the 8,820 who had registered, exercised their franchise in the Kerala elections.

Women power

Women yet again turned out to be more eager voters than men.

“I am very happy to tell you like Bihar, women turned out in larger number than men in Kerala, Puducherry, West Bengal and (in) almost equal (numbers) in Tamil Nadu,” Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi revealed in New Delhi.

And when it came to the actual percentages, it was not just Tamil Nadu and West Bengal that recorded high numbers.

They were in the high seventies and above throughout - with Tamil Nadu recording 78.8%, West Bengal 84.46%, Kerala 75.12%, Puducherry 85.57% and Assam 76.04%.

Money power

The Election Commission revealed that over Rs 74.27 crore in unaccounted money had been seized during the elections.

Tamil Nadu led the way with over Rs 60.1 crore being recovered from the state.

In Assam, Rs 5.20 crore was seized.

Raids in West Bengal yielded Rs 8.35 crore and those in Kerala Rs 62 lakh.

Eleven cases of ‘paid news’ were also being investigated by the commission.

The actual counting

The Chief Election Commissioner has said that the vote counting will take place in 839 halls – 234 of them in Tamil Nadu, 312 in West Bengal, 142 in Assam, 140 in Kerala, and 11 in Puducherry.

An elaborate three-tier security cordon has been put in place for the counting, set to begin at 8 am.

43,982 officials and nearly 17,700 central security personnel will be involved in the process.

NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs confirmed on Wednesday that Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Dorjee Khandu has been killed in a chopper crash.

The chopper crashed between Kyela and Lobothang near Tawang district at a height of 4900 metres. Search operations are on to locate the chief minister’s body.

Six helicopters have been sent to the crash site to confirm the identity of bodies. Family members and associates will be reaching the crash site with the help from Army helicopters.

External affairs minister SM Krishna said he is deeply pained by the demise of Dorjee Khandu. (Read:Krishna condoles demise of Arunachal CM)

Earlier in the day, home minister P Chidambaram said the crash site had been located and some bodies sighted. “Not encouraging and not good news,” the minister told reporters, adding that a rescue team had spotted what appeared to be an aircraft in an area between Kyela and Lobothang at an altitude of 4,900 metres (16,076 feet).

“They have sighted three bodies. This sighting has been made from a height. They have not been able to go down to the place where the aircraft is (lying) crashed. The message has been given to the nearest Army post which is sending a team,” he had told reporters.

On Wednesday morning, search operation for missing helicopter carrying Khandu focussed on in three areas along Indo-Bhutan border.

“Based on inputs received from the ISRO satellite and the Sukhoi-30 aircraft, as well as information provided by some local people, the search operations are now going inNagar GG, District Tawang; immediate south of Sela Pass known as Eagle’s Nest Reserve Forest and district Phangrong in Bhutan”, said home ministry jointsecretary Sambhu Singh.

Singh had said, “The search operations are being carried out by teams from the Army, ITBP, SSB, Arunachal Pradesh Police, NDRF and grazers from Arunachal Pradesh. The Government of Bhutan has also deployed search teams on its side of the border”.

The Pawan Hans AS350 B-3 helicopter carrying the chief minister took off from Tawang at 9.50 am on Saturday. The last radio contact with the ground was about 20 minutes after take off as it flew over the Sela Pass along the Chinese border perched at an altitude of 13,700 feet.

Apart from Khandu, the people on board included crew members Captain J S Babbar and Captain K S Malick, Khandu’s security officer Yeshi Choddak and Yeshi Lamu, sister of Tawang legislator Tsewang Dhondup.

CNews Nepal: A Pakistani embassy official here was shot and wounded by unidentified motorcycle-borne gunmen outside the mission building, with Islamabad voicing concern over the attack.

Mehboob Asif, a visa section officer, was shot as he stepped out of the embassy building at Basundhara in the outskirt of the capital.

He was shot three times, police said adding that his assailants, who were riding on a motorcycle, escaped.

Mr. Asif was rushed to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj with bullet wounds in his stomach, police said, but described his condition as stable.

In Islamabad, a Foreign Office spokeswoman Tehmina Janjua said the official was an assistant counsellor in the embassy. “We have taken up the matter with the Nepalese government,” she said.

The Kathmandu police launched a massive manhunt for the killers and rounded up over 100 suspects for questioning.

The shooting of the Pakistani visa officer comes after a recent wave of gun attacks in the capital by unidentified gunmen, fuelling concern over public security.

Mariam Nawaz Sharif and Farah Dogar: Daughter Wars

Written by: Sumaira

As PML(N) is after the is after the daughter of chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, the MQM has sneaked in and distributing pamphlets about the illegal migration of Mariam Nawaz Sharif from Army Medical College, Rawalpindi to the King Edward Medical college, Lahore.

As the daughter wars raging high, nation is flabbergasted over the issue. While the India is threatening at our Eastern borders and the NATO is heating up attacks on our Western borders, while the mainland Pakistan suffers from all kinds of crisis and the economy is plummeting in the darkness of loadshedding, jacking up of numbers and migration of daughters are the hot issues.

Well these daughter nepotism issues are surely important but then they are routine in Pakistan. If a survey is carried out by the impartial parties then very very few, if any, of the politican, bureaucrat, or army officer would be left without garnering any benefit for his or her family and friends. Accountability should be carried out, but there is a place and time of everything, and this is not the time for this daughter juggernaut.

…..

Two richest women in Pakistan: Kulsoom Nawaz and Mariam Nawaz

Do you know that Mariam Nawaz Sharif is one of the richest persons in Pakistan? She owns a number of businesses gifted to her by her father and also received in bribes by her husband from leading politicians, bureaucrats and smugglers in Abbottabad.

A leading carpet export business in Lahore, Gulshan Carpets, is owned by ladies of Ittefaq group ( Mariam Nawaz Sharif, Sabiha Shrif) but operated on their behalf by one Sheikh Hamid. No reference is ever made to Gulshan Carpets in any of the business transactions of the Ittefaq Group.

http://richpaki.tripod.com/richest.htm

Begum Kalsoom Nawaz Sharif is the daughter of Doctor Hafiz Butt. She alleged pay a professor to write her PhD thesis at Punjab University on ‘Urdu Shayeri mein Fitrat Nigari 1857’. Doctor Hafiz (father of Begum Kalsoon Nawaz) was son in law of famous wrestler Gama Pehlwan. This family eats a lot and ordinary means cannot feed their hunger, that’s why they resort to corruption and bribery.

However, she very rightly complained that during her hubsand’s persecution at the hand of Pervez Musharraf, many elements (except Javed Hashmi) in the PML did not support her, but rather opted for a policy of non-confrontation with the army. For months before the exile of Nawaz Sharif to Saudi Arabia, Kalsoom built a momentum for political activity. It paid off in the form of putting an end to the agony of her husband in jail when her husband signed a letter of apology and committed to refrain from politics for ten years.

…….

‘Rules bent for Mariam Nawaz’

Staff Report (Daily Times, 15 Dec 2008)

LAHORE: Rules were bent in 1991 to admit Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Mariam Nawaz to King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan People’s Party leader Munawwar Anjum said on Sunday.

Anjum, who is a member of the Central Executive Committee of the PPP, was commenting on Nawaz’s demand for the resignation of the chief justice of Pakistan after a controversy over his daughter’s admission to a medical college.

“Perhaps Mr Sharif can make such demands because the method he used to get Mariam into the KEMC was more suave,” he said, talking exclusively to Daily Times.

Mariam was a grade-B student in matric and FSc and scored 580 out of 850, and 767 out of 1,100 in the two exams in 1989 and 1991 respectively, he said.

“Clearly, she did not qualify for admission to the KEMC on open merit. She was admitted to the Army Medical College in Rawalpindi and was migrated after only a month to the KEMC, which she left without completing her degree,” Anjum said.

He said it was ‘almost comical’ that having done something similar, the Sharifs were pointing fingers at the chief justice.

…..

Mariam Nawaz deprived three candidates of admission in medical colleges

ISLAMABAD: PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif wants CJ Abdul Hameed Dogar to resign over allegation that his daughter received undue favour for admission in a private medical college, but he is yet to offer an apology for his own daughter Mariam actually receiving such favour for enrolment in a public sector medical college in 1991, according to a report published in the Weekly Pulse.

That year, Mariam Nawaz’s marks, 765 out of 1,000, in F Sc were too low to get admission in any public sector medical college in Punjab, and the minimum provincial merit was 803/1,000 at Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur.

Mariam wanted admission in King Edward Medical College (KEMC) in hometown Lahore. But with her father as PM and uncle, Shahbaz Sharif, as CM, how could it be that her wish was not realized, the report said. She was first admitted to Army Medical College Rawalpindi, in 1991, and within a couple of months, was migrated to King Edward in clear violation of Migration rules. Mariam’s deprived not just one but two candidates competing for admission in public sector medical colleges. If this was not enough, investigations reveal that one professor at KEMC, Dr Shahnaz Javed of Physiology Dept was transferred from the college for not allowing an illegal increase in her attendance percentage to meet her attendance shortage for lectures in that subject.—Online

……

PML-N starts crying while Nawaz Sharif’s corruption in the case of her daughter’s admission in a Medical College and later migration to King Edwards Medical College exposed in the National Assembly

Kundi takes notice of pamphlet distribution

ISLAMABAD, Dec 19 (APP): Deputy Speaker, National Assembly Faisal Kundi Friday said no material can be distributed on floor of the House or within the Parliament premises without permission of the Speaker. “In view of rules of business and the statements of members I observe that no printed or other material can be distributed in the Parliament premises without permission of the Speaker,” Kundi observed in response to a point of order regarding distribution of a pamphlet against Mariam Nawaz daughter of PML-N chief, Mian Nawaz Sharif.

“Let me look into the matter and find out,” he said when members Shahnaz Sheikh and Hanif Abbasi raised the issue on floor of the House showing the pamphlet.

The members claimed that the pamphlet, alleging illegal migration of Mariam Nawaz Sharif to King Edward Medical college and seeking apologies from Nawaz Sharif, was being distributed in the Parliament premises and the government should answer why it was happening.

Shahnaz Sheikh said, the issue of Farrah Dogar was being discussed in media for several days and “today pamphlets are being distributed against Mariam Nawaz.”

“This exercise is uncalled for. They are daughters of the nation and we should ensure their respect and dignity,” Ms Sheikh said.

She said when the country was confronting with important security issues, the politicians and the media should focus on national security instead of getting involved in casual issues. “I also request Mian Nawaz Sharif to focus on national issues.”

MNA Hanif Abbasi said, maligning Nawaz Sharif through a pamphlet being distributed within the premises of the Parliament is deliberate.

He demanded an inquiry committee to probe the matter, otherwise he said, his party would expose every illegal act of the members and leaders highlighting their shortcomings.

“Whose marks were tampered, we would talk about that. But distribution of pamphlets within the Parliament premises calls for proper action,” he said.

He said his party might have not objected, had the pamphlets been distributed on roads, but it has been done within the Parliament premises.

Deputy Speaker remarked that he would look into the matter.

“Let me check how it happened,” he said.

……

Mariam Nawaz’s Illegal Migration to King Edward

By Pulse Report December 18, 2008

Nawaz Sharif’s daughter arrives in Karachi to see her father (22 November 1999)

PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has asked Chief Justice of Pakistan Abdul Hameed Dogar to resign as part of the propaganda campaign in a section of the press alleging that Chief Justice’s daughter Farah Hameed Dogar received special favour in F Sc examination from the Federal Board, which facilitated her admission in the International Islamic Medical College.

This is despite the fact that Mr. Sharif’s own daughter, Mariam Nawaz, was awarded a special favour coincidentally also with regard to admission in a medical college, which, in her case, happens to be a public sector institution.

Weekly Pulse investigations reveal that Mariam Nawaz scored 580 marks out of 850 marks in the Matric exam with a B Grade and 765 marks out of 1000 marks in F Sc (Pre-Medical) with a B Grade. These marks were too low to get admission in any public sector medical college in Punjab in 1991, which Mr Sharif was the Prime Minister and the PML-N had a government in Punjab.

Mariam Nawaz was interested in getting admission in the King Edwards Medical College, Lahore, which is Pakistan’s leading medical college and, therefore, the most competitive in admission merit. The admissions in medical colleges were granted on All-Punjab basis, with the lowest merit being 803 marks in the F Sc (pre-Medical), at the Quaid-i-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur. Obviously, the merit at the King Edwardss Medical College was far higher.

Mariam Nawaz was admitted to the Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, in 1991. However, within a short time of one month or so, Mariam Nawaz was migrated to King Edwards Medical College in violation of the Migration Policy.

As per the rules mentioned in the Prospects of the Government Medical Colleges in the Punjab for Session 1991-92 regarding Migration, such migration shall be allowed only after the student has cleared the First Professional Examination.”

In detail, the said Migration rule for “a student who has been admitted in one medical college of the Province” and wants to migrate to another college within the province during the same course,” sets three conditions, two of which pertain to the father/guardian of the student either dying or transferred to another city being a government servant.

The rule says that migration should be discouraged under normal circumstances and the respective principals must agree before it takes place. The third rule that applies to Mariam Nawaz’s case, but was violated, states the following: “The migration can be allowed on compassionate grounds if both the principals agree. Such migration shall be allowed only after the student has cleared first, Professional Examination. The clause shall not be applicable to those admitted against Divisional, Under-Developed Seats.”

Since Mariam Nawaz was not admitted under such reserved seats, the above-mentioned clause duly applied to her case. Without appearing in the first Professional Examination, she was migrated from Army Medical College to King Edwards Medical College. She did not appear in the first Professional Examination even at King Edwards Medical College, and left the college before that.

Now those behind the mischievous campaign against Chief Justice Dogar’s daughter seem to imply that by using an “illegal” favour, she deprived another candidate of the right to get admission in the International Islamic Medical College, which, unlike King Edwards Medical College, is a private sector institution.

If the same criteria is applied to Mariam Nawaz’s case, then she deprived not just one but two candidates competing for admission in public sector medical colleges in 1991. If this was not enough, Pulse investigations reveal that one professor at King Edwards Medical College, Dr Shahnaz Javed of Physiology Department was transferred from the college for not allowing an illegal increase in her attendance percentage to meet her attendance shortage for lectures in that subject.

This magazine has further learnt that, in 1998, Mariam Nawaz again applied to the Principal of King Edwards Medical College to obtain admission in MBBS but was able to obtain admission in the Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore. The request was approved by the Admission Committee of the College. Despite that, Mariam Nawaz did not join, thereby depriving a third candidate of the right to be admitted in a public sector medical college.

As against Mariam Nawaz, the current chief justice’s daughter is being targeted for seeking a favour, which, as she explained in a recent press statement, was no favour as such. Farah Hameed Dogar was just one of the 1093 applicants who applied for re-checking of their answer sheets after the Federal Bureau of Intermediate and Secondary Education declared the results for 2008.

According to her statement, she was among the 201 students for whom the broad issued revised mark sheets in accordance with rules and regulations, and that she applied for admission only in three private medical colleges which admit students on self-finance basis. She got admission in the International Islamic Medical College wherein 50 seats are filled on merit and another 50 are reserved for children of overseas Pakistanis. The college has one seat reserved for Al-Mizan Foundation, a welfare body for retired judges. This seat is rotated every year among the four provinces and in 2008 it was reserved for Sindh. That is how Farah Hameed Dogar was able to get admission at the International Islamic Medical College.

Compare this issue, which is pending hearing in the Islamabad High Court, with the mockery of justice done in the case of Mariam Nawaz, who was able to enter Pakistan’s best public sector medical college, the King Edwards with just 767 out of 1000 marks in F Sc (Pre-Medical) in 1991, despite the fact that the lowest admission merit that year was 803 out of 1000 marks in the F Sc (pre-Medical) at the Quaid-i-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur.

17 years have passed since rules were violated to facilitate the illegal migration of Mariam Nawaz from Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, to King Edwards Medical College, Lahore, depriving two legitimate candidates of admission in public sector medical colleges of the Punjab. A decade has passed since Mariam Nawaz deprived yet another legitimate candidate of admission in the public sector medical college.

Yet Mian Nawaz Sharif has not apologized even once from the nation for this mockery of justice that took place first during his first stint in power at the Centre and in the Province and second time in his second stint in power at both places.

1. (C) SAUDIS UNHAPPY WITH ZARDARI: Echoing Pakistani interlocutors in Washington and Islamabad, in an introductory call with PolCouns, Pakistani DCM Sarfraz Khanzada (protect) characterized Saudi-Pakistani relations as “under strain.” This was due, he said, to a lack of Saudi confidence in the Zardari government. He cited a sharp reduction in Saudi financial assistance to Pakistan, and said that the Saudis had not provided “a single drop” of oil at the concessionary terms promised last year (refs c & d). Instead, during 2008, the Saudis had provided assistance in the form of a single $300 million check, considerably less than in previous years, but “beggars can’t be choosers,” he lamented. Khanzada opined that the Saudi government appeared to be “waiting for the Zardari government to fall.”

2. (C) NAWAS FAVORED: Khanzada said the Pakistanis are convinced that Saudi King Abdallah would prefer to see Pakistan run by former PM Nawas Sharif, and were cutting back assistance to Pakistan to hasten this eventuality. Nawas “practically lives” in Saudi Arabia, Khanzada declared, claiming that Nawas had even been favored with reserved prayer space in the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. Because Nawas’ daughter is married to a grandson of King Fahd, he has “become a member of the Saudi royal family.” (Comment: Embassy is not able to confirm whether this is true. End comment.)

3. (C) AFGHAN MEDIATION: Khanzada claimed that the Pakistani government was not directly informed about the Saudi Afghan mediation effort, though they suspected that Nawas had been present, since he was in Mecca at the same time. While the Pakistani government did not oppose such talks in principle, they believe they have little chance of succeeding without U.S. and Pakistani participation.

4. (C) COMMENT: Khanzada’s remarks track with reporting from Islamabad and Washington regarding Pakistani concerns about deteriorating relations with the Saudis. While our Saudi interlocutors tend to be less forthcoming, they’ve made no secret of their reservations regarding Asif Zardari. Nevertheless, officials continue to insist that Saudi Arabia supports efforts to stabilize Pakistan, and we expect that Saudi officials will participate in the next round of meetings of the Friends of Pakistan

How can women artists remain behind? For peace, they have decided to perform in the 10-hour program of music, dance and poetry at Constitution Club in Delhi on September 23. Entry will be free.

Women from different movements, folk traditions and professional artists will get together to celebrate peace and communal harmony.

“Responding to the growing violence in the country and the building up tension around the September 24 judgement women get together to say that we want peace and communal harmony,” said organizers in a release.

The program HumAman will present some of very talented women artists who have not performed in the capital- like the weavers from Tezpur, Assam and north eastern network who are bringing a dance performance as well as the products that they weave.

The performers include Parveen Sabrina Khan, a 16-year-old prodigy singer who sings sufi music from Rajasthan, tribal singers from Gujarat, performers from Chattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, a young percussionist group from Kerala, young and upcoming artists from Delhi like Namrita Pamnani and Sneha Chakradhar, flute player Sulochana Thapa, student poetesses from Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan- Alisha Dhyani, Vamika and Gauri Kant and young student singers from Lady Shriram College.

Along with these there are renowned artists from Delhi like the dancer Pratibha Prahlad, singer Vidya Rao, Pratiksha Sharma and Manu Kohli. The programme will culminate with the performance of Tabla maestro and Ustad Zakir Hussain sahab’s disciple Anuradha Pal from Mumbai.

The program and artists will also make a strong demand of political participation.

“They will also assert that only through women’s political participation in the parliament and assemblies peace can be ensured. Women are the worst sufferers of any conflict and violence and no one else but women understand the meaning of lasting peace and communal harmony,” the organizers said.

The program will start at 10:30 am and will run 9 pm, at Deputy Speaker Hall, Constitution Club, Rafi Marg, New Delhi.
