To add spice to the unending fixing saga, it is alleged that a Bollywood actress has been used to lure players on the English county scene into underperforming, completing a heady cocktail of quick money, نساء, and moles in the game that probably assist bookies who seem to be concentrated in India, Pakistan and Dubai.

England’s Sunday Times newspaper claimed, through a sting operation, that a “web of match-fixers are increasingly focusing their attention on the English county game and players” because, as it said, “nobody monitors them”, in addition to the Indian and Bangladesh T20 leagues and international matches. The publication also alleged that an unnamed Bollywood actress is being used as a honey trap by bookies to make players underperform, and that illegal betting rings are prepared to offer up to £750,000 to players who comply.

The newspaper’s undercover reporters claim to have video recorded a Delhi bookmaker, identified as Vicky Seth, “boasting” about his targets. “English county cricket is a good new market,” he allegedly says in the poor quality video. “They are low-profile matches and nobody monitors them. That’s why good money can be made there without any hassle if we can get the players to play for us.”

Another bookie – identified as Monubhai – alleges that he had worked with players from top cricketing nations. “I was invited to strike a deal with some New Zealanders but I didn’t go. The IPL starts on April 4, then everyone will be doing it,” he is alleged to have said.

The paper claimed that “tens of thousands of pounds are on offer to fix matches, typically £44,000 ($70,000) to batsmen for slow scoring; £50,000 ($80,000) for bowlers who concede runs; and as much as £750,000 ($1.2 مليون) to players or officials who can guarantee the outcome of a match”.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) declined to comment. Colin Gibson, ICC’s head of media and communications, told the paper: “We do not comment of Anti Corruption and Security Unit matters.” But, probably, more than the English county games, it is the mention of the India-Pakistan World Cup semi-final in Mohali that should be a reason for concern for cricket fans and the cricket boards of India and Pakistan.

Former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja, who is in Dhaka as a television commentator for the ongoing Asia Cup, admitted that the game has been beset with problems and that a solution has to be found soon.

Reacting to the India-Pakistan World Cup semi-final, the suave Raja, who was part of the commentary team at the match in Mohali on March 30 last year, said it was a “good game”.

“They [allegations of Sunday Times] have not targeted Pakistan. I don’t know how to react to this. There have been problems at the international level with regard to spot-fixing and match-fixing, and that’s a chequered history of our game, unfortunately,” Raja told MAIL TODAY during a Bangladesh-Pakistan match at the Sher-e-Bangla International Cricket Stadium.

“But, having said that, I think you cannot just carry on getting the game highlighted for the wrong reasons. I think it’s very important that we take care of the sport and play it as honourably as possible.”

Raja, 49, لكن, said he would prefer to wait for some time before committing. “I guess we have just got to wait and see what evidence they have provided to the ICC. I have no other comment to make because this is very early to do it. It was a good game, actually; a close game,” وقال. The mobile confiscated from Khan reportedly contained a bank account number of Pakistan’s Nasir Jamshed and e-mail ID of Rana Naved Hasan.

A few weeks ago, former Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield became the first English cricketer to be jailed for corruption after he admitted to accepting money to fix a match against Durham in a competition in England in September 2009. Last year, three Pakistan players – Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir – were jailed in Britain for their involvement in spot-fixing in 2010.

This was reported that president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Sharad Powar had given away the trophy to Indian team captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni in a ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after they won the World Cup.

However, that trophy was a fake one as it had no ICC logo nor the name of the winners on it.

The Indian media further said that the original trophy is in the custody of the Mumbai customs who levied a tax of Rs2.2 million on it.
But the ICC in a bid to avoid any tax gave away the fake trophy to the Indian team after winning the final.

Tournament director Sauro Naik said that the original trophy of the World Cup would be sent back to Dubai today.

There has been much drama over whether the World Cup that the champions can’t seem to put down is the replica or the real.

It has been suggested in the media that the original Cup is lying with the Customs department because of the non-payment of duty on the Cup. The original gold and silver Cup is valued at $130,000.

The International Cricket Council has, however, rejected these allegations, saying the real Cup was handed to the champions.

“Contrary to some erroneous and mischievous media reports, the ICC can confirm the trophy presented to India at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday was the original ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 trophy and the one that was always intended to be presented to the winner of the event,” the ICC statement read.

“There is no question that this was a replica. The trophy presented to India indeed carries the specific event logo of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and has always been the cup that the 14 teams were playing for,” it added.

The ICC said the Cup in the customs’ custody is the “perpetual trophy” which is used for promotional purposes.

“The trophy seized by Mumbai customs is the promotional, perpetual trophy which remains in the keeping of ICC at its headquarters in Dubai. It carries the generic ICC corporate logo rather than the logo specific to the 2011 حدث. That trophy will be reclaimed today and will travel back to Dubai with ICC staff as was always intended,” the governing body said.

The Indian cricket players can’t seem to put it down it but the World Cup trophy they have with them is actually just a replica as the original is still lying with the customs.

Because the trophy that captain Dhoni and his teammates so passionately kissed, hugged and adored – and millions of fans worldwide cheered – was a fake.

A mere replica, not the original. This has never happened in the 36-year history of the cricket World Cup.

Did the Indian players know that the cup that Sharad Pawar, president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and India’s agriculture minister, presented to them, the gold-and-silver trophy that President Pratibha Patil lovingly touched at a reception on Sunday, was not the real one?

Interestingly, a day before the final, Dhoni and his Sri Lankan counterpart Kumar Sangakkara had customarily posed with the same replica. And whether their teammates were aware of that? Chances are they were not.

The real trophy, valued at about $130,000 in money terms, but priceless for any cricket lover, was not at the Wankhede stadium, as the world had been led to believe.

It was rotting at a secure government godown, having been seized by the Mumbai Customs on its arrival from Colombo after the Sri Lanka-New Zealand semifinals on March 29.

The reason: The trophy, according to India’s Byzantine customs rules, was not eligible for exemption from import duty! And a combination of bumbling babudom, and the ICC’s bungling, ensured that it stayed under lock and key at the airport. Now, it will be flying back to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Dubai headquarters on Monday – without having once being actually touched by the team which had fought so hard to win it.

A top official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (بنك الاعتماد والتجارة) and an ICC official confirmed that the trophy was going back to the ICC headquarters. “The trophy is being taken back to Dubai,” said Suru Naik, World Cup tournament director (India). An ICC official confirmed: “The trophy is returning to Dubai on Monday.”

The ICC, meanwhile, is getting in a tangle of mis-statements as it tries to desperately cover up its bungling. The ICC spokesperson insisted that the real trophy is never presented to the winning team, and that only the replica is presented to the winners.

But photographs of Australia captains Steve Waugh (1999) and Ricky Ponting (2003, 2007) receiving the original trophy, which was instituted in 1999, prove otherwise.

The base of the original trophy has names of all the winners since 1975 engraved on it while the one presented to Dhoni at the Wankhede Stadium had a blank black base.

A customs official at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati International Airport confirmed the shocking development, and added a fresh twist to the sorry tale. “The ICC has been insisting that the trophy which came on the flight from Colombo (after the Sri Lanka-New Zealand semi-finals on March 29) is a replica of the original World Cup trophy that is already at the Wankhede Stadium,” he said on Sunday.

هكذا, if the original trophy was indeed at the Wankhede Stadium, then why were ICC officials desperate to have the ‘replica’ released from the customs. What would they have done with it by taking it inside the city? And if the real trophy was at the Wankhede, why wasn’t it presented to Dhoni? These questions remain unanswered.

“ICC officials told us that that this trophy has no commerciaلكن as it is used for promotions only. However, when examined by a valuer, the trophy was estimated to be worth Rs 60 lakh or so, made of pure silver and gold. The payable customs duty is about Rs15 lakh. If it is a replica, then does it have to be exactly of the same value as the supposed trophy?

It includes “sport equipments; medical instruments; photographic and audio-visual equipment and supplies; broadcast equipment and supplies; computer and other office equipment”.

While BCCI and ICC officials are trying to play down the issue, government officials blame the BCCI for all the confusion. “It is clearly a lapse on the part of the ICC or BCCI. They should have added the words ‘World Cup trophy’ while applying to the government for customs exemption,” a senior tax official said. “Moreover,” he added, “why couldn’t ICC and BCCI, which are extremely rich, pay the customs duty? The duty would be peanuts for them.”

The Prudential Cup was the trophy that was presented in the first editions, من 1975 إلى 1983, when the Kapil Dev-led Indian team won it.

In 1987, it was called the Reliance Cup after the sponsors, as the tournament moved out of Britain for the first time .

When contacted, the Customs sources said the Cup was with them for non-payment of duty of 35 per cent of the original value.

“We will release it after payment of 35 per cent customs duty after its valuation,” they told PTI.

The Cup, meanwhile, has been in the forefront of the celebrations by the entire Indian nation with players even posing with it along with President Pratibha Patil at the Raj Bhavan yesterday.

The captain of the winning team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been photographed and caught on television cameras carrying the replica to the iconic Gateway of India opposite the team hotel yesterday.

This has never happened in the 36-year history of the cricket World Cup.

It would be very sad for Indian Cricketing Fans and players to know that the trophy which Dhoni and his teammates so passionately kissed, hugged and adored – and millions of fans worldwide cheered – was a fake.

The express bowler, who would retire after the World Cup, dismissed Sachin Tendulkar in the 2003 edition to deny the Indian a century. Akram said the 35-year-old Akhtar is at his best against India.

COLOMBO: Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar would announce retirement from international cricket today (الخميس), team manager Intikhab Alam said.

Shoaib Akhtar will retire from the international game at the end of Pakistan’s World Cup, bringing to an end one of cricket’s most compelling and mercurial careers. He told his Pakistan team-mates of the decision at the Premadasa Stadium on Thursday morning, during an emotional gathering in which he delivered a farewell speech and was embraced by fellow players and support staff.

Privately, over the last few months, Shoaib had been looking at the World Cup as a final hurrah for a body increasingly unable to cope with the rigours of the international game. The tournament itself has been a mixed one for him: he was outstanding through ten overs in Pakistan’s win over Sri Lanka. But after an impressive opening spell against New Zealand he was taken for 28 runs in his final over, bowling a succession of waist high full tosses at Ross Taylor as New Zealand changed the game.

He was dropped for the subsequent Zimbabwe game – having earlier been rested in the game against Canada – and it was as much for his performance as continuing concerns over his ability to be at optimum operation in his second and third spells.

Shoaib made his first international appearance in December 1997, against West Indies. He shot to fame in 1999, when he bowled Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar in 1999 in the Asian Test Championship game against India, and continued that form into the World Cup where he was one of Pakistan’s most effective bowlers.

But since then, issues pertaining to his action, discipline and injuries severely curtailed his career.
